SNOW IN WINTER AN IMPRESSIONIST APPROACH ON A BLACK BACKGROUND We will work on black Canson paper using photographs provided by the teacher. Participants will also be asked to bring a few photographs of their own. We will explore how to use black to create striking contrasts. THE BLACK BACKGROUND Black Canson Mi-Teintes paper allows us to build the composition from the contrast between shadow, represented by the black paper, and light, created with pastel. Unlike watercolour, we work from the lightest areas to the darkest. Throughout this process, we will explore how to use blending techniques to achieve the desired effects. The work will be created in the spirit of the Impressionists. PROGRAMME Day 1: - The process: analysis and explanations based on a photograph. - Tonal values: a black-and-white study on a black background. - Colour studies. Day 2: - A fully developed and finished pastel painting on a black background. - Pastel work based on participants’ own photographs and personal projects. HOW THE WORKSHOP WORKS The teacher gives a step-by-step demonstration, and participants are invited to follow along. Each step is followed by a pause during which the teacher can support each participant. The workshop includes studies based on the photographs provided, as well as more personal work based on each participant’s own photographs. Participants are asked to bring photographs and reference materials for this part of the workshop. PRACTICAL INFORMATION Venue: Artiloft Montreux, Avenue des Alpes 104, 1820 Montreux.
